The 11th Grade Test Prep Timeline Every Parent Needs
Junior year is the most important year in your child’s testing journey, and it moves fast. The PSAT happens in October, holiday breaks eat up December, and by spring the best SAT and ACT dates are already filling up. Families who map out the year now can spread the work out and avoid a senior-fall scramble. Here’s a month-by-month plan you can use with your junior this year.
Why Junior Year Matters So Much
Three things make 11th grade the key testing year:
- The PSAT/NMSQT counts this year. Only the junior-year PSAT enters students into the National Merit Scholarship Program. Freshman and sophomore scores are practice.
- Junior-year grades and scores are the latest colleges see. Early action and early decision deadlines usually fall in November of senior year, so admissions officers read junior-year work closely.
- It leaves room for a retake. Many students score higher on a second attempt. Testing first in junior year means there’s still time for a second or third try before applications are due.
Fall (September–November): Get a Baseline
This season is about information, not pressure.
- Take the PSAT/NMSQT. Schools give it anywhere in the October 1–30, 2026 window, so ask your school counselor for your child’s exact date. Scores come back in late October and November.
- Take one full practice SAT and one full practice ACT. Both are accepted by U.S. colleges, but many students do noticeably better on one. The SAT is fully digital and adaptive, with a built-in Desmos graphing calculator. The ACT moves at a faster pace, and its science section became optional in 2025. A side-by-side comparison is the fastest way to pick one test and stop splitting your time.
- Set a target score. Look up the middle 50% SAT or ACT range for the colleges on your child’s early list. That gives prep a concrete goal.
Winter (December–February): Focused Prep and a First Official Test
Once you’ve chosen a test, start structured prep. Two to three focused sessions a week is plenty for most students. Consistency matters more than long weekend cram sessions.
- Use the PSAT score report. It shows which skills cost the most points. Start there instead of reviewing everything.
- Consider a first official attempt. The December 5, 2026 SAT (register by November 20) and the December 12, 2026 ACT are good first tries for students who prepped in the fall. The February 27, 2027 ACT is another solid option.
- Review every practice test the right way. Students improve most by understanding why they missed a question, not by taking test after test.
Spring (March–June): The Main Testing Window
For most juniors, spring is when the best scores happen. Coursework has caught up with what the tests cover, and there’s time for a retake before summer.
- SAT dates: March 6, May 1 and June 5, 2027. Registration closes about two weeks before each test.
- ACT dates: April 10 and June 12, 2027. Registration closes about five weeks before each test.
- Plan around AP exams. AP exams run through early-to-mid May, so a March or June test date is often less stressful than May.
- Register early. Popular test centers fill up, especially in spring.
Summer Before Senior Year: The Final Push
If your child hasn’t hit their target yet, summer is valuable. There are no classes competing for attention. The July ACT and the late-summer and early-fall SAT dates give one more chance before early application deadlines. The goal is to finish testing by early fall of senior year, so your child can focus on essays and applications.
Mistakes Parents Can Help Avoid
- Waiting until spring to start. A late start leaves no room for a retake.
- Prepping for both tests at once. Pick one and commit, unless the practice scores were nearly identical.
- Ignoring registration deadlines. Put them on the family calendar now.
- Testing too often without new prep. Retaking without changing how you prepare rarely moves the score.
